Erie, PA (Oct. 12) – The University of Connecticut women's ice hockey team opened their season on Saturday afternoon with a 2-0 loss at the hands of the Mercyhurst Lakers of the CHA.
Laker winger Lyndsay Barch scored the game-winner with less than a minute to play in the first period. Scoring was frozen in the second and Mercyhurst added an insurance goal in the third on the power play.
UConn goaltender Shannon Murphy (Mapleville, RI) made 32 saves in the loss and was named the game's second star for her efforts. The Huskies start their season with an 0-1-0 record, as the Lakers improve to 3-0-0 in non-conference match-ups.
The Huskies and Lakers meet again on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m., also at the Mercyhurst Ice Center. UConn plays its home opener on Saturday, Oct. 19 at 2 p.m. against Wisconsin.
