Women's Track Downs Princeton and Rutgers

PRINCETON, NJ (Jan. 12, 2002) -- The University of Connecticut women’s track and field team returned to action Saturday afternoon, defeating both Princeton and Rutgers in its second meet of the indoor season. With 70 points, UConn edged Princeton, who finished with 66 points. Rutgers had 53 points.
UConn was helped by nine first-place performances, including seven in point-scoring events. Leading the way for the Huskies was senior Sharmaine Abrams (Manchester, CT), who notched two first-place performances in the 55-meter dash (7.30) and the 200-meter dash (25.80).
In the short sprints, Abrams was joined in the victory column by junior transfer Gillian Flemmings (Bridgeport, CT). Flemmings registered a time of 8.64 in the 55-meter hurdles for her second victory in as many meets in the hurdles.
In the distance events, senior Nichole Tremblay (Warwich, RI) finished first in the 1,000-meter run with a time of 2:59.23 while sophomore Sarah Casilli (Jamaica Plain, MA), following up a standout season in cross country, notched a victory in the mile with a time of 5:01.97.
Senior Wadudah Nurul-Islam (Providence, RI) and junior Lisa Deskis (Broad Brook, CT) rounded out the Husky victories in the point-scoring events. Nurul-Islam scored her second victory in the weight throw this season, posting a heave of 56’71/2” while Deskis finished first in the high jump with an effort of 5’7”.
The Huskies return to action next Saturday, January 19, at the New England Challenge Cup in Providence, RI.
