STORRS, CT (September 8, 2001) -- The University of Connecticut field hockey team lost to No. 8 Penn State today, 3-1, in University Park, PA.
The win drops UConn’s record to 2-2, and gives PSU its first win of the season. With the loss, the Huskies remain winless against ranked teams after losing their first game of the season to No. 2 North Carolina. Penn State is now 1-2 on the season.
Freshman Lauren Henderson (Avondale Harare, Zimbabwe) scored UConn’s only goal of the game at the 5:50 mark of the first half off an assist by sophomore Amy Marland (Mt. Warrigal, Australia) that took the Huskies into halftime leading, 1-0.
PSU came back with a vengeance in the second half, though, as they scored three goals, the first two barely a minute apart. The Nittany Lions’ goals came from freshman Karin Grap, assisted by senior Meredith Shulzitski; freshman Bekah Hostetler, unassisted; and Shulzitski, unassisted.
The Huskies’ next match-up comes against New Hampshire at 3 p.m., Sept. 12, at Harvard.
