STORRS, CT – An overtime goal by junior Salla Ranta (Helsinki, Finland) put the University of Connecticut women’s soccer team past Providence College, 2-1, in a BIG EAST Northeast Division match-up at Morrone Stadium in Storrs on Sunday afternoon. The win raises Connecticut’s overall record to 7-2-0 overall, 4-0-0 in the BIG EAST, while Providence falls to 4-3-1 overall, 0-2-1 in the conference.
Providence got on the board first 4:02 into the game. Caitlyn Welsh chipped a shot from the right side over the reach of UConn keeper sophomore Erin Rice (Keller, TX) for the score. The two teams played scoreless for the remainder of the half, with Connecticut taking the advantage in shots, 12-3.

She controlled a deflection off a Providence defender and nailed the shot into the center of the net to send the game into the overtime period. UConn outshot Providence, 32-3, after 90-minutes of play.
Ranta’s goal came 12:43 into the overtime stanza. Senior Mary-Beth Bowie (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia) sent a ball into the Husky offensive box to senior Alexa Borisjuk (North Haven, CT). Borisjuk passed the ball to the center where Ranta blasted the left-footed shot into the net for the win.
