Men's Golf Opens Play at 2001 McLaughlin Tournament

FARMINGDALE, NY (September 27, 2001) – The University of Connecticut men’s golf team was in action at the 2001 McLaughlin Golf Tournament on Thursday as it traveled to Farmingdale, NY, and combined for a score of 599, which has the squad in eighth place following day one. Rollins College leads the field of 18 at 564, while host St. John’s is in second with a score of 571.
Pacing the Huskies, was Sean Vigue (Sr., Lebanon, CT) who fired back-to-back scores of 71 in order to tie Chris Baloga of Towson for sixth at a two-over par 142. Kevin O’Connor (Sr., East Lyme, CT) strung together rounds of 74 and 76 as he stands in 26th with five others at 150 (+10). Daniel Keefe (Fr., Cumberland, RI) lowered his first round score of 78 to a 76 in the second as he is in a five-way tie for 49th with a13-over-par, 153. Kevin Coghlan (Sr. North Ridge, CA) and Geoffrey Reilert (So., Simsbury, CT) mirrored each others two-round efforts as they both carded a 155 (+15) to round out the list of Husky competitors as they and five others are tied at 54th.
After playing the first 36 holes on Thursday, the McLaughlin Tournament will conclude tomorrow with a round of 18. Following that, the Huskies will travel to Newport, RI, for the Adams Cup which is set to be held October 2-3. A season ago at this tournament, UConn finished 12th with a three-round total of 920.
