STORRS, CT (September 2, 2001) -- The University of Connecticut field hockey team clinched the championship of the Morgan Stanley Husky Classic Sunday with a decisive 6-1 win over Albany behind the strong play of sophomore Amy Marland.
After heading into halftime tied at one a piece, the Huskies blew open the second half, adding five more goals, three from Marland, and one each from sophomores Abby Ostruzka and Kelly Stolle. Freshman Lauren Henderson scored UConn’s first goal of the game, her third in just two games. Henderson also tallied an assist along with Stolle and senior Megan Ware.
"We focused on offense this week, because we felt we would have the opportunity to score this weekend, so it’s pleasing to see it come together," head coach Nancy Stevens said.
Goalie Maureen Butler allowed only one Albany goal from Amy DiMicco while tallying seven saves.
"I thought Maureen Butler was extremely good in goal," Stevens said.
The win propelled the Huskies to 2-1 on the season, and dropped the Great Danes to 0-3.
For the tournament, UConn tallied 10 goals from four different players while allowing only one goal to be scored against them.
"We had balanced scoring; we had a lot of scoring, so that was exciting to see," Stevens said.
In the second game of the day, St. Jospeh’s defeated Providence, 5-2, to move each team to 1-1 on the season.
Following the second game, MVP’s were named for each team as follows:
Albany—Jen Gonzalez
Providence—Courtney Dow
St. Joseph’s—Lauren Bradley
Connecticut—Kelly Stolle
The Huskies will be back in action at 1 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 8, at Penn State.
