TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Sophomore Katie Kestranek (Manlius, N.Y.) ripped a double down the left field line in the bottom of the seventh, to lead the fifth-seeded University of Connecticut softball team to a 2-1 come-from- behind victory over sixth-seeded Bethune-Cookman Thursday night of the 2001 NCAA Division I Women's Softball Regional at the Seminole Softball Complex in Tallahassee, Fla.
Kestranek would later score the tying run on an RBI single to left center by senior Jessica Yanosy (Milford, Conn.). Sophomore Elisa Brinkworth (Amherst, N.Y.) scored the game- winning run off a wild pitch, after pinch running for freshman Jessica Bigos (Fall River, Mass.) who had a single in the late inning.
Sophomore ace Barb Cook (Conklin, N.Y.) claimed the win in the circle, after relieving senior Megan Biddle (Bear, Del.) in the top of the sixth.
UConn improves its overall record to 36-22 to stay alive in the NCAA Tournament. The Huskies will meet fourth-seeded Florida (36-27) tomorrow at 3 p.m.
The postseason game with the Gators will be broadcast live by WHUS 91.7 FM radio and can be accessed best on the Internet at www.whus.org or a link on the UConn Softball website. Live game stats and play-by-play can also be found on www.seminoles.com.
