BOSTON, MA -With only the pentathlon scheduled for the opening day of the 2001 IC4A Championship held in Boston, MA, the University of Connecticut men’s track team jumped out to an early lead in the meet with a first and second place effort on Friday. Will Thomas and Mark Jellison supplied the 18 points, which has UConn ahead of second place Liberty by 12.
Thomas amassed 4,059 points for top honors and in doing so bettered the school record he set a week ago during the New England Indoor Championship. It was at that meet that Thomas set a standard for the University by winning the pentathlon with a score of 3,961 to erase Aaron Thorton’s 3,902 that came a season ago. Placing second on Friday for the Huskies was Mark Jellison who finished with a career best 3,971
The IC4A Championship will continue tomorrow at 4 p.m. and run through Sunday. A year ago UConn placed fifth in the field of 53 at this meet.
