ERIE, PA (Feb. 16, 2001) -- Peter Rynshoven netted two goals and assisted on another to lead Mercyhurst College past the University of Connecticut men’s ice hockey team 6-4 at the Mercyhurst Ice Rink in Erie, PA on Friday evening. UConn falls to 10-15-4 overall, 10-8-3 in the MAAC, while Mercyhurst improves to 16-9-2 overall, 16-4-1 in the conference.
Mike Boylan (Doylestown, PA) gave the Huskies their only lead of the game at the 4:12 mark of the first period during the power play. Eric Nelson (Big Lake, MN) and Matt Herhal (Pottstown, PA) assisted on the goal. Mercyhurst then went on to record the next three goals. Jeff Gould nailed a shot at the 5:25 mark on a Rynshoven assist, followed by an Adam Tackaberry power play tally just under four minutes later.
Jody Robinson opened the second period five minutes in on a power play goal, giving the Lakers the 3-1 advantage. Connecticut’s Derek Stephens (Ellisville, MO) recorded his first collegiate point at the 7:49 mark on an assist from Matt Owens (Framingham, MA) bringing UConn within one goal. Rynshoven netted his first goal of the night on the power play with 1:36 remaining in the stanza.
Mercyhurst took the 5-2 lead 3:41 into the third period on a Brad McDonald goal. UConn’s Michael Goldkind (Silver Spring, MD) raised the Huskies score midway through the third stanza with help from Herhal and Ciro Longobardi (Wallingford, CT). Connecticut closed the gap to one goal at the 14:01 mark with another power play tally from Ron D'Angelo (Massapequa, NY). Owens and Anders Johnson (North Kingston, RI) assisted on the goal. Rynshoven sealed the Mercyhurst victory netting an insurance goal with one second remaining in regulation.
Artie Imbriano (Stoneham, MA) suffered the loss in net recording 16 saves, while Mercyhurst’s Peter Aubry stopped 27 UConn shots. Despite the loss, the Huskies outshot the Lakers, 27-16. Mercyhurst was 3-4 on the power play while Connecticut was 2-6.
Connecticut will face-off against Canisius College in Buffalo, NY on Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
