Huskies Claim Five First-Place Performances at Brown Invitational

PROVIDENCE, RI (Dec. 1, 2001) -- In its first indoor meet of the season, the University of Connecticut women’s track and field team claimed five first-place performances at the Brown Invitational in Providence, RI. Leading the way for the Huskies was senior Wadudah Nurul-Islam (Providence, RI) who shattered a school record in the weight throw.
Nurul-Islam’s effort of 61’5” in the weight throw qualified her for Nationals as well as bettered her previous best of 60’5 1/4”, which was also the school record, set last season at the New England Indoor Championship. The heave also gave Nurul-Islam her second straight victory in the weight throw at the Brown Invitational. The day was not finished for Nurul-Islam, as she took home first place in the shot put with a throw of 42’11”. Nurul-Islam’s teammate junior Amy Parkosewich (Bethlehem, CT) finished second in the shot put.
Junior Kafi Davis (Norwich, CT), junior Gillian Flemmings (Bridgeport, CT) and senior Sharmaine Abrams (Manchester, CT) rounded out the Husky first-place performances. Flemmings led a 1-2 UConn finish in the 55-meter high hurdles with a time of 8.31. Flemmings was followed by freshman April Garner (Temple Hills, MD), who finished second with 8.38. Abrams’ cruised to nearly a three-second victory in the 300-meter dash, posting a time of 40.75 to distance Brown’s Konique Ballah, who finished second with 43.40. Davis leaped to a victory in the long jump behind an effort of 17’3 1/2”.
On the day, UConn recorded 22 top-five finishes in the 18 events. Sophomore Deirdre Mullen (Princeton, NJ) and junior Lisa Deskis (Broad Brook, CT) placed second and third, respectively, in the high jump while freshman Caitlyn Brady (Englewood, CO), junior Andrea Gourdine (Penfield, NY) and Davis finished second, third and fourth, respectively, in the triple jump.
The UConn women’s track and field season continues Saturday, Jan. 12, in a meet at Princeton University.
