STORRS, CT (November 6) – University of Connecticut women’s soccer team member Mary-Beth Bowie (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia) was named to the Soccer America Team of the Week on Tuesday by Soccer America Magazine.
Bowie, who was named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team over the summer, netted goals in UConn’s wins over Yale and Villanova last week. Her score against the Wildcats on Sunday in the BIG EAST Championship quarterfinals, which came from the right end line at an improbable angle, gave the Huskies a 1-0 win. The goal was her fourth of the season and third in her last four games.
The honor, which is awarded each week to only 11 players across the country, was the third for the UConn women’s soccer team this season. Freshman Zahra Jalalian received the honor for the week ending October 14 and senior Casey Zimny earned the honor for the week ending October 21.
Other members of the Soccer America Team of the Week include: Kristin Slater, GK, Arizona State; Anna Kraus, D, Santa Clara; Chelsea Montero, D, St. Mary’s; Brianna Valento, D, Kansas; Casey Hamel, M, Florida; Jena Kluegel, M, North Carolina; Carli Lloyd, M, Rutger; Jessi Moore, F, Mississippi State; Nicky Thrasher, F, Texas A&M; Christy Welsh, F, Penn State.
The Connecticut women’s soccer team will play West Virginia in the semifinals of the 2001 BIG EAST Women’s Soccer Championship on Friday, November 9 at Yurcak Field in Piscataway, NJ. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
