STORRS, CT (November 23) – The University of Connecticut men’s ice hockey team played to a 2-2 tie against the United States Military Academy in a MAAC League game in front of 1,032 at the UConn Ice Arena on Friday night.
The two teams played scoreless through the first period of play with Army taking the 15-8 advantage in shots on goal.
Army took the 1-0 lead on a goal by Chad Mayfield just over a minute into the second stanza. Connecticut’s Anders Johnson (North Kingston, RI) then tied the score at the 6:22 mark of the period. Johnson took a wrist shot from the high slot blanking Black Knight goalie John Yaros, who was screened by his own teammates. Jon Ames (Baldwinsville, NY) and Mike Boylan (Doylestown, PA) assisted on the score.
After a mostly scoreless third period, Johnson fed a pass across the mouth of the goal for a waiting Ames at the far post, who in turn tipped it in to give UConn the 2-1 lead at the 13:53 mark. Matt Herhal (Pottstown, PA) also assisted on the goal. Army evened the score with a 1:38 remaining in regulation on a power play tally from Joe Carpenter.
UConn’s Jason Carey (Oakdale, MN) stopped 33 shots on goal, and Yaros recorded 27 saves in net for the Black Knights. Army went 1-8 on the power play, while UConn was 0-6.
The Huskies will host MAAC league rival Quinnipiac University on Sunday, November 25 at 2:00 p.m. at the UConn Ice Arena in Storrs. The game will be televised locally on Connecticut’s UPN 59.
