SPRINGFIELD, MA – Senior Evan Schwarz (Shaker Heights, OH) scored a goal and added two assists to lead the University of Connecticut men’s ice hockey team past AIC, 8-2, in a MAAC contest Friday night in Springfield, MA.
With the win, the Huskies move to 2-5-1 overall and are 2-1-1 in league play, while AIC falls to 3-6-0 overall and 2-5-0 in MAAC play.
AIC opened the scoring in the first period on a power play goal when Guillaume Caron took a feed from Mike Bujdos and Olivier Gagnon and slipped a shot past UConn goalie Paul Morrissey (Winchester, MA).
However, UConn answered with six goals in the second period by six different Huskies. Freshman Patrick McLaughin (Virginia Beach, VA) started the flurry just two minutes into the period when he connected on passes from Schwarz and Senior Anders Johnson (North Kingston, RI), and was followed five minutes later by junior Ron D’Angelo (Massapequa, NY) who scored off a junior Scott Brown (Blaine, MN) pass. Two minutes later, at the nine minute mark, senior Matt Herhal (Pottstown, PA) snuck in unassisted for UConn’s third goal of the period. AIC managed another tally at 13:43 by Caron to make it 3-2, but UConn responded with three quick goals, all within three minutes, to keep the lead. Sophomore Matt Owens (Framingham, MA), freshman Justin Postiglione (Philadelphia, PA), and Schwarz scored at 16:07, 17:31, and 18:32, respectively, to put the game out of reach for the Yellow Jackets.
D’Angelo and junior D.J. Miller (Mount Lebanon, PA) rounded out the scoring in the third period.
Morrissey finished the night with 18 saves on 30 AIC shots, while AIC goalies Frank Novello (29) and Chad Davis (7) combined for 36 saves on 44 UConn shots.
The Huskies return to action on Friday, November 23, when they host MAAC foe Army at 7:00 p.m. in the UConn Ice Arena.
