SYRACUSE, NY (October 28, 2001) - The Syracuse Orangemen clinched the BIG EAST regular-season championship Sunday afternoon as they dropped the University of Connecticut field hockey team, 4-1.
The loss gives the Huskies a final regular-season BIG EAST record of 1-4 and an overall record of 8-9. SU, however, ended the regular-season with a perfect 5-0 record in the BIG EAST and a 13-3 overall record. After going undefeated in the conference last season, this is the first time in five years that UConn has not won the BIG EAST regular-season championship.
The Orangemen used the first half to jump out to a 3-0 lead on the Huskies with goals by Kristin Aronowicz, assited by Emily Smith and Michelle Aronowicz, Joanne Lambard, assisted by M. Aronowicz and Ann-Marie Guglieri, and Brittany Carriero. Unlike Wednesday night, when the Huskies recovered from a 3-0 deficit to defeat Fairfield, 6-4, UConn was unable to come back this time.
The Huskies did manage a goal just barely into the second half by sophomore Mary Jo Malone (Water Mill, NY), her fifth in four games, from freshman Lauren Henderson (Avondale Harare, Zimbabwe). The goal, however, came 23 seconds after Syracuse’s fourth of the game, and the Huskies were out of answers.
Despite the loss, the Huskies are still in the running for a bid to the BIG EAST tournament, being played Nov. 3-4, at Boston College.
