STORRS, CT (October 25) – University of Connecticut women’s soccer team member Casey Zimny (Rochester, NY) was named to the Soccer Buzz National Elite Team of the Week on Thursday by Soccer Buzz Magazine.
Zimny, who was named BIG EAST Preseason Co-Defensive Player of the Year over the summer, anchored the UConn defense that allowed only one goal over the weekend. She was a major factor in the win over the Irish, disrupting runs and clearing passes out of the box in 90 minutes of action. The senior also scored UConn’s first goal of the game on a free kick from 18 yards out, her first tally of the season and first since November 20, 1999.
The honor, which is awarded each week to 11 players across the country, was the first for a UConn women’s soccer team member this season. Zimny also earned a spot on the Soccer America Team of the Week and was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week earlier in the week. She has started every game this season and has helped the Huskies post nine shutouts and limit opponents to 0.71 goals a game.
Other members of the Soccer Buzz Elite Team of the Week include: Lindsay Gusick, F, Virginia; Karen Hasselman, GK, Iowa State; Linsay Johnson, F, Texas A&M; Christine Latham, F, Nebraska; Ryan Lee, M, Baylor; Chelsea Montero, D, St. Mary’s (CA); Kim Patrick, F, Tennessee; Danielle Slaton, D, Santa Clara; Lisa Stoia, M, West Virinia; Aly Wagner, M, Santa Clara; Bonnie Young, D, Penn State. There were 12 players selected this week due to a tie in voting.
The No. 9 Connecticut women’s soccer team defeated No. 18 Harvard last night 1-0 in overtime. The Huskies will next travel to Hanover, NH on Monday, October 29 for a match-up with Dartmouth. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
