MORGANTOWN, WV (October 12) -– Behind a shutout by senior goalkeeper (Williamsburg, VA), the No. 15 Connecticut women’s soccer team downed BIG EAST opponent No. 21 West Virginia, 1-0, Friday night. UConn improves to 9-4 overall this season while West Virginia falls to 8-3-1. Both teams have already clinched berths in the BIG EAST Tournament, which begins November 3.
Caldwell, in her first start in goal of the season, notched eight saves en route to her first complete game of the season. The Mountaineers kept the pressure on the Husky goal for most of the contest, out-shooting UConn, 19-11, and registering four corner kicks to Connecticut’s one.
Despite being outshot by West Virginia, the UConn offense struck first in the contest at the 50:11 mark on a goal by freshman (Auburn, WA), the first of her collegiate career. Connecticut senior (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia) crossed a ball into the box from the right side. With Mountaineer goalie Finley running to intercept the ball, Jalalian charged the play, sliding to get to the ball first and poking it past Finley into the net. Bowie was credited with the assist, her third of the season.
The goal proved to be enough, as Caldwell kept the Mountaineer offense at bay the rest of the game to preserve the shutout.
UConn returns to action in a contest against William & Mary Sunday in Williamsburg, VA. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
