Connecticut Swimming and Diving Falls Short to Syracuse

The Husky men lost a close battle to the Orangemen by a mere 10-point margin, 124-114. Despite the loss, four event titles were won by senior co-captain Barry Hoey (Dublin, Ireland) in the 1,000-yard freestyle (9:43.02), sophomore Marshal Livingstone (Endwell, N.Y.) in the 100 freestyle (47.64) and freshman Chase Dunlap (Canandaigua, N.Y.) in the three-meter diving event (264.07 points).
Connecticut's top relay team comprised of Livingstone, freshmen Dustin Rogers (West Allis, Wis.) and Dan Levine (Columbia, Conn.), and sophomore Craig Orksi (West Sayville, N.Y.), won the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:13.26 to round out the four event wins for Connecticut.
In women's action, UConn claimed one-two-three in the 200-yard freestyle behind fast swims by freshman Katie Jelus (Beavercreek, Ohio), who clocked in a winning time of 1:55.36, senior Rachel Schwartz (Middletown, N.J.) with a 1:55.60 and senior Liz Klink (Mt. Arlington, N.J.) with a 1:55.73. Connecticut would fall, 134-109, to the Orangewomen, even behind a 400 freestyle relay victory (3:39.16) by the Huskies' second best relay team made up of Jelus, Schwartz, junior Anne McAndrew (Centerbrook, Conn.) and senior Erin Moran (Cheshire, Conn.).
The Huskies next host BIG EAST opponent West Virginia on Saturday, Feb. 3, at the Wolff- Zackin Natatorium in Storrs at 1 p.m. The meet will be the last homestand of the year and will recognize Connecticut's Senior Class of 2001.
