SOUTH BEND, IN (Nov. 3, 2000) -- With a 3-0 victory over Syracuse Friday night, No. 24 UConn advanced to the finals of the BIG EAST Conference Womens Soccer Championship for the sixth consecutive time and the seventh overall since the BIG EAST Championship format was incepted in 1993.
Alexa Borisjuk (North Haven, CT) got the Huskies on the board at the 39:31 mark. Borisjuk took a feed from Sarah Popper (Penn Yann, NY) at the top of the box and blasted a 14-yard shot to the bottom left corner of the net. It took less than three minutes for the Huskies to strike again as senior Jen Laccone (Wallingford, CT) came off the bench to give UConn a 2-0 lead. The scoring opportunity started in the backfield when Popper passed the ball up the right side of the field to Mary-Frances Monroe (East Northport, NY) who then served the ball to Laccone in the right corner. Laccone made good on a 14-yard shot to the top left corner of the goal.
UConns third and final goal came from Monroe at the 69:39 mark. Monroe chipped the ball from five yards out, beating Syracuse goalie Katie Karlander. Jen Carlson (Shelburne, VT) and Megan Almanzo (New Hope, MN) assisted on the goal.
UConns Maria Yatrakis (Brooklyn, NY) recorded her seventh solo shutout, making one save.
UConn, the No. 1 seed in the Northeast Division will face Notre Dame, the No. 1 seed in the Mid Atlantic Division in the finals of the BIG EAST Tournament on Sunday. The championship game is scheduled for noon in South Bend, IN at tournament host Notre Dames Alumni Field.
