AMHERST, Mass. (Nov. 16)- In a match that lasted nearly three hours, the University of Connecticut men's hockey team finalized a tie with the University of Massachusetts, 2-2, on Thursday night at the Mullins Center before a crowd of 2,791 in Amherst, MA.
After both teams went scoreless in the first period, the Minutemen scurried to 2-0 lead with goals from junior Luke Duplessis (15:06) and freshman Thomas Pock (19:35).
In a third quarter effort, UConn managed to even the score on a pair of back-to-back goals made by senior Mike Anderson (Springfield, MA) and junior Mike Boylan (Doylestown, PA) with 15 minutes left in regulation. Anderson made the play with help from junior forward Matt Herhal (Pottstown, PA), while Boylan scored the tying goal on an assist from senior Eric Goclowski (Hamden, CT).
Freshman goalie Artie Imbriano (Stoneham, MA) made 28 saves in goal, while junior Mike Johnson of UMass had 17. UConn (0-for-2) and UMass (0-for-3) could not convert on power play opportunities.
Last season, UMass (3-5-2) handed Connecticut (3-4- 2) a 7-4 loss at the same site and tonight's performance provided the Huskies redemption against the Hockey East school. This marks the Huskies' second tie of the year, after going 1-1 with Sacred Heart on Oct. 28.
Connecticut will next host MAAC League opponent Mercyhurst at the UConn Ice Arena on Wednesday, Nov. 22 in Storrs at 7 p.m.
