UConn Advances To NCAA Sweet 16 In Women's Soccer

Storrs, Conn. - The University of Connecticut women's soccer team used a second half goal to defeat the University of Wisconsin by a score of 1-0 in a Second Round NCAA Women's College Cup game at Morrone Stadium in Storrs on Sunday (Nov. 12). The contest, played before a crowd of 796, advances the Huskies to the NCAA Sweet 16 Round. Connecticut received a first round tournament bye. UConn now stands at 16-6-2, while Wisconsin finishes the year at 16-7- 1.
After a scoreless first half UConn got on the board at the 55:47 mark when sophomore Naima Montacer (Wallingford, CT) blasted a crossing pass from senior Jen Carlson (Shelburne, VT) past Wisconsin keeper Kelly Conway. Junior Mary Beth Bowie (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia) also assisted on the goal. The Huskies held Wisconsin to eight shots on the day and sophomore Maria Yatrakis (Brooklyn, NY) made six saves in goal to earn the shutout.
This is the 19th consecutive year the Huskies have earned berth to the NCAA Women's College Cup, and have advanced to the third round every year since 1993.
UConn advances to a third round game at the University of Nebraska (22-1), a 4-0 winner over Richmond in second round action. The game will take place on Friday, November 17 at 8:05 p.m. EST in Lincoln, NE at the Abbott Sports Complex.
