STORRS, CT (Oct. 31, 2000) -- The #4 University of Connecticut mens soccer team used a second half goal to defeat intra-state rival Hartford 1-0 before a crowd of 1,437 at Morrone Stadium in Storrs on Tuesday night. The victory improves the Huskies to 14-2-2, while the Hawks fall to 6-10-4.
The Husky goal was scored by freshman Cesar Cuellar (Santa Cruz, Bolivia) on a fantastic long serve by senior Brent Rahim (Diego Martin, Trinidad). Rahim sent the ball to the top of the box as Cuellar was shadowed by two Hartford defenders. Cuellar gained control of the ball beating the defense before scoring on an 18-yard blast.
The contest was a physical affair with five yellow cards issued, four to Hartford and one to Connecticut. UConn keeper Bryheem Hancock (Middletown, DE) made two saves to earn the shutout.
The Huskies return to action on Sunday afternoon when they host Syracuse in a BIG EAST Tournament quarterfinal game at Morrone Stadium in Storrs. The game is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. The Huskies hope to avenge their only BIG EAST regular season loss, suffered at the hands of the Orangemen on October 14.
