10/31/2000 12:00:00 AM | Field Hockey
Connecticut has the top-seed in the tournament after sweeping BIG EAST opponents, 5-0, for a second consecutive year in a row. The Huskies are vying for a record fifth conference championship title and can become the first league team to capture three consecutive titles.
The first semifinal doubleheader on Friday, Nov. 3, will feature UConn and fourth-seeded Syracuse at 5 p.m. Then, second-seeded Rutgers will match up against third-seeded Providence at 7 p.m.
The championship game will be played on Sunday, Nov. 5 at noon. The winner of the tournament receives the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division I Field Hockey Championship Tournament. The BIG EAST is one of eight conferences whose top team receives an automatic bid to postseason play. There are eight at-large bids remaining thereafter, to round out the NCAA field of 16.
In the latest 2000 STX/NFHCA Division I Coaches Poll released on Oct. 31, the Huskies remain ranked tenth nationally with a 14-6 overall record. Syracuse is ranked 17th at 12-7 on the season, while Rutgers and Providence are not ranked.
