STORRS, Conn. (Oct. 29) - In the last game of the regular season, the tenth- ranked University of Connecticut field hockey team fell to sixth-ranked Princeton, 2-0, at the George J. Sherman Family-Sports Complex in Storrs on Oct. 29.
The Huskies hung tough throughout the match against the nationally-ranked Ivy League school. Defensively, the senior backline of Katie Stephens (Hershey, Pa.), Kelly Rosborough (Uxbridge, Mass.) and Sara Sartori (Dover Plains, N.Y.) held the Tigers to 15 shots on goal.
Both of Princeton's two goals would come off penalty corners made by sophomore Emily Townsend assisted by teammates Hilary Matson and Kellie Maul. The Huskies and Tigers played for 70 minutes amid snow flurries and gusty winds.
Junior Alana Linick (Chelsea, Mass.) had 14 saves in goal, while Kelly Baril had seven stops for the Tigers. This was the first shut out of the season handed to UConn by an opponent.
Connecticut ends the season at 14-6 overall and 5-0 in the BIG EAST. The Huskies now have their sights set on the BIG EAST Conference Championship Tournament to be held in Storrs on Nov. 3 & 5.
After going undefeated in the conference for the second consecutive year, UConn picked up the top-seed in the tourney and will have a rematch with fourth-seeded Syracuse in the first semifinal game on Nov. 3 at 5 p.m. Second-seeded Rutgers will face third-seeded Providence in the second game of the semifinal doubleheader at 7 p.m.
UConn is vying for a record fifth conference championship title and can become the first league team to capture three consecutive titles. Connecticut and Syracuse are the only teams to qualify for all 12 conference championships. The championship game will be played on Sunday, Nov. 5 at noon. The winner will receive the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division I Field Hockey Tournament Field.
