The victory for UConn helped the Huskies clinch their third consecutive BIG EAST Conference regular season championship and Connecticut will be the top seed for the upcoming BIG EAST Conference Tournament.
UConn, 13-2-2 overall, completed regular season play in the BIG EAST with an 8-1-2 mark, good for 18 points and the regular season crown. St. John's University ended the regular season in second place with an 8-2-1 record and 17 points.
Freshman Cesar Cuellar (Santa Cruz, Bolivia) opened the scoring for UConn in its clash with Rutgers when he scored his team-leading 10th goal of the season with 15:58 remaining in the first half. Sophomore Rui Fernandes (Bridgeport, CT) and senior Brent Rahim (Diego Martin, Trinidad) assisted on Cuellar's goal as the high-scoring frosh got the ball at the top of the box, turned and drilled the ball into the back of the net.
Rutgers, 9-8-1 overall and 5-5-1 in the BIG EAST, tied the game midway through the second half when Todd Moser scored after gathering a loose ball following an initial save by UConn goalie Bryheem Hancock (Middletown, DE).
Lewis' game-winning goal, his eighth score of the season, came 3:56 into the first sudden victory overtime period. He rifled a shot into the net after a scramble for a loose ball in the box.
UConn outshot Rutgers in the game 15-11. Hancock made five saves in net for the Huskies while Ricky Zinter of Rutgers stopped four UConn shots.
Connecticut completes regular season play on Tuesday, October 31, when the Huskies host the University of Hartford at 7 p.m. under the lights at Morrone Stadium in Storrs.
