Golf Opens Strong At New England Intercollegiate Championships

Brewster, MA (Oct. 23) - Following day one at the 66th annual New England Intercollegiate Golf Championships, the University of Connecticut stands in seventh place in the field of 46. The Huskies total of 314 (+26) strokes puts them 18 behind current leader and defending champion Rhode Island (296, +8). The two-day event is being held on the par-72, Captains Golf Course in Brewster, MA.
Leading the way for the Huskies is Kevin O'Connor (Jr., East Lyme, CT) who went out in 39 and came in with a 37 to combine for a 76 (+4) in order to tie six others for 14th. Kevin Coghlan (Jr., Northridge, CA) turned in a six-over-par 78 for a 28th place tie. John Humphreys (Sr., Niantic, CT) and Chris Jeffrey (Fr., Lincoln, RI) mirrored each other's performance as they both tallied rounds of 80 (+8) tying for 49th. Sean Vigue (Jr., Lebanon, CT) rounded out the list of Husky scorers as he carded an 81 (+9) to tie for 63rd.
Tournament play concludes tomorrow with Connecticut looking to improve on its sixth-place performance at the championships a season ago. Due to rain in 1999, the tournament was reduced to 18 holes with UConn combining for a 323.
