Student-Athlete Success Program Overview
Mission Statement: The Student-Athlete Success Program (SASP) supports the overall missions of the University and Department of Athletics by providing resources dedicated to empowering student-athletes to become independent thinking, successful, ethical student learners. SASP and our students are expected to uphold the highest level of academic inquiry while promoting intellectual growth and expression, social responsibility and citizenship. SASP is committed to outreach, service, and leadership training, which promotes the holistic development of our students and acts as a foundation for lifelong learning.
Prior to changing our name to Student-Athlete Success Program in 2016, our department was known as the Counseling Program for Intercollegiate Athletes (CPIA), and was established in 1986 to provide counseling, tutoring, and academic enhancement to over 650 intercollegiate student-athletes each year. The primary goal of the program is to assist student-athletes in reaching their educational goals while competing in intercollegiate athletics. SASP counselors function as liaisons between the athletic and academic communities.
Our counselors work closely with coaches, faculty and a variety of campus resources in order to help facilitate students' successful transition into college by instituting academic and social support programs, which include but are not limited to Counseling, Pre-Advising, Tutorial, Life Skills Programs and boundless opportunities for personal growth and development. SASP is now considered as one of the model programs of academic support in the country.
UConn is also proud to have high achieving students. Each year, the dedication our student-athletes translates itself in many academic accolades such as Big East Academic All Stars, Academic All-American and Honda Broderick Award. This is one of the reasons why U.S. News and World Report have recently picked UConn among the top public institutions in New England that balance athletic success with academic integrity and graduation. UConn truly has the best of both worlds.
During the past decade, there has been an upward trend of students achieving a 3.0 grade point average or higher. Our student-athletes graduate at a rate higher than the general student population and many are actively involved in a number of community service activities with surrounding elementary, middle and high schools.
The Student-Athlete Success Program at the University of Connecticut is constantly evolving, changing and expanding to meet the needs of student-athletes. Please feel free to call, email, or stop by the offices to talk with any of the counselors or Director.
