SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The UConn men's soccer team opened the 2025 season with an emphatic 1-0 win over the Syracuse Orange on Thursday night at the SU Soccer Stadium.
Senior forward Austin Brummett scored the game-winning goal in the 18th minute off a beautiful counter-attack by the Huskies front line. The San Diego State transfer played all 90 minutes at forward, tallying the first goal of the season for the Huskies.
Redshirt-sophomore Kyle Durham was instrumental in the win, earning his first career start at goalkeeper for the Huskies. The New York native made four saves, all coming in the first half, earning his first career clean sheet.
UConn took the one goal advantage into the halftime break, as shots favored the Orange 4-3.
Syracuse turned up the pressure in the second half recording ten shots in the final 45 minutes, but the Huskies defense anchored down, holding the Orange to zero shots on goal.
UConn starts the season with a victory for the third straight year, under fourth year Head Coach Chris Gbandi. "I am proud of the guys," said Gbandi. "The guys fought, blocked a lot of shots, and competed. Any time you get a win on the road, you'll take it - especially to start the season against a good opponent."
