STORRS, CT - HERO Sports announced their annual Preseason G5 All-American first, second, and third teams on Wednesday with UConn wide receiver Skyler Bell (Bronx, NY) and running back Cam Edwards (Norwalk, CT) among this season's honorees. Both Bell and Edwards were named to the second team. This year, 44 programs have at least one representative. Here are some of the best G5 players going into the 2025 season.
In addition, HERO Sports released their 2025 Group of Five Preseason Top-25 Media College Football poll with the Huskies coming in ranked No. 21. Boise State is unanimously ranked No. 1 in the preseason media poll for this season. Members of nationally-focused media outlets as well as at least one team beat reporter from every G5 conference is involved.
The Huskies are led by Head Coach Jim Mora who enters his fourth season on the sidelines in Storrs. UConn is coming off a 9-4 season where the Huskies went to their second bowl game under Mora and came away with a win over UNC in the Wasabi Fenway Bowl. Bell and Edwards return this fall to fuel an offensive unit that scored the most points of any UConn team in the FBS error last fall.
Bell, who was recently named to the 2025 Biletnikoff Award watchlist, made an immediate impact for the Huskies, hauling in 50 passes for 860 yards and five touchdowns. He averaged 17.2 yards per catch on the season, ranking 37th among the nation's top-receivers. He was one of 47 receivers in the nation to be named to this year's preseason list. Â
Edwards was named a 2025 preseason candidate for the Doak Walker Award. He has seen his work load and production increase in each of his seasons in Storrs and is coming off a year where he lead the Huskies in rushing. Edwards carried the load for the ground game last fall, registering 146 carries for a team-best 830 yards, averaging 5.7 yards per carry.
The duo were also named to the Shrine Bowl 1000 watch list this preseason.
UConn opens the 2025 season on Saturday, August 30 when they host Central Connecticut at Pratt & Whitney Stadium at Rentschler Field. Kick-off is slated for 2 pm. Tickets are on sale now by visiting UConnTickets.com
