CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – UConn sophomore running back Cam Edwards (Norwalk, Conn.) rushed for 89 yards and a touchdown but the Huskies fell short on the road, falling at Boston College 21-14 Saturday afternoon in front of 36,902 at Alumni Stadium.
The Boston College offense held the ball for 40:44 minutes and ran 83 plays to 43 for the Huskies. The Eagles converted on 10-of-16 on third down and 3-of-4 on fourth down while picking-up 30 first downs. BC's Kye Rboichaux rushed for 112 yards and two scores and quarterback Thomas Castellanos had 80 yards as the Eagles finished with 246 on the ground in the win.
The Huskies, now 1-7 on the season, took advantage of a BC fumble on their first possession of the game, getting the bal at midfield. UConn needed nine plays to cover 51 yards with r-junior Ta'Quan Roberson (Orange, N.J.) coming up with a pair of third-down converting throws and junior Jelani Stafford (Brownsville, Pa.) plunging in from a yard out for a 7-0 lead at 4:26. It was Stafford's team-leading sixth touchdown on the year.
Castellanos answered on the next drive, leading a 10-play, 75-yard drive that Robichaux capped with his first of two touchdowns on the day, knotting the game up at 7-7 before the first quarter ended. The Eagles scored seven again on their next drive as Castellanos hit Alex Broome from six yards out to go up 14-7 at 6:26.
BC threatened for points late in the first half, after stopping the Huskies on fourth down on their own 40-yard line. Castellanos looked to the endzone but r-junior Malik Dixon-Williams (Orlando, Fla.) came down with his first interception of the season.
The Eagles ate up 7:21 on the clock to start the third but saw a 14-play drive end with no points after a L Connor 44-yard field goal missed. BC forced a three-and-out and then found points as Robichaux had a 13-yard touchdown run for a 21-7 lead with 0:40 left in the quarter.
UConn pulled within a score on their next drive as Edwards ripped off a 30-yard touchdown run up the right side at 13:51 in the fourth. UConn would only get to within 21-14, however. A Noe Ruelas (West Hartford, Conn.) 54-yard field goal attempt was short at 6:44 and the Eagles never gave the ball back to the Huskies. Castellanos led a 13-play drive, picking up a fourth down and a third down to allow the Eagles to kneel out the win.
Roberson finished 11-of-24 for 130 yards in the loss. Defensively, junior Tui Faumuina-Brown (Pittsburg, Pa.) finished with a team-high 12 tackles, 8 solo. Senior Jackson Mitchell (Ridgefield, Conn.) made 11 tackles, 1.0 for a loss while r-sophomore Pryce Yates (San Antonio, Texas) had six tackles, a sack and a fumble recovery for the Huskies.
