Huskies Take Down Providence for 2nd Straight Win

STORRS, Conn. - Â The UConn women's volleyball team won their second BIG EAST match of the year as they took down Providence Wednesday evening 3-1. Freshman Mya Ayro led the Huskies with 11 total kills.
The Huskies and friars were locked in a battle from first serve. Trading points early, both teams looked to string points together and build a lead. UConn found their stride, relying on their defense to help them take the 11-6 lead. After a Providence timeout, the Friars stormed back to tie the game at 15. Providence eventually took a 22-20 lead forcing a UConn timeout. Following the timeout, the Huskies were unable to make the comeback as the friars took set one by a final of 25-22. After the first set, sophomore Emma Werkmeister led the way for the Huskies finishing with 4 kills.Â
Providence used the momentum gained from set one to take the early lead in the second set. After weathering the early Providence attack, the Huskies stormed back to the 11-9 lead. After taking the lead, the UConn attack took control and looked to take the second set. The Huskies defense once again led the way, in the second set. Through two sets the Huskies had 30 digs which created more opportunities for the offense. UConn eventually took the second set by a final of 25-17.
The UConn offensive attack stayed hot in the third set as they were able to jump out to a seven point lead and continued to attack. The friars did not back as they slowly chipped away at the UConn lead. The Huskies countered the Providence run, with a scoring run of their own and never looked back. UConn took an 18-13 lead and was able to take the set by a final of 25-22.Â
The Huskies used the momentum gained from the previous two sets to jump out to an early 6-2 lead. After taking a seven point lead the Huskies looked primed to take the fourth set. Providence did not back down as they stormed back to tie the game at 13 forcing a UConn timeout. After the timeout UConn found their stride again and were able to regain the lead. UConn eventually took the fourth set by a final of 25-___ and winning the match three sets to one. Three Huskies finished the match with double digit kills, Mya Ayro (11), Taylor Pannell (11), and Emma Werkmeister with 10.
UConn will be back in action Friday, October 20 to take on Creighton in Storrs. The game is scheduled to start at 6pm and can be streamed live on Flo Sports.
