BETHLEHEM, PA – The UConn women's cross-country team jumped back into action on Friday taking part in the 48th annual Paul Short Run presented by ASICS.
The Huskies finished 13th overall as a team in the 46-team field at the Goodman Campus Cross Country Course on the campus of Lehigh University.
"Great experience today at the Paul Short Run," stated Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Beth Alfrod-Sullivan. "This was a great meet and with a very competitive field. We came in hoping for a top-10 team finish but came close. I thought we made a few strategic mistakes early on, but we were moving up the whole race. I'm really proud of our finishing efforts, especially from our top-five. I thought we showed some great times on this course, but we just need to execute better to get the results we hope for.
Sophomore Chloe Thomas (Dundas, Ontario) saw her first race action of the season on Friday and was the Huskies top-finisher on the 6K course. Thomas posted a new PR with a time of 20:24.1, putting her 49th in the field. "Chloe Thomas, first race of the season and a great debut," said Sullivan. "She showed a great fitness level, got the rust off. We can't wait to see her the next time out."
Junior Jenna Zydanowicz (West Hartford, CT) also turned in a new PR with a time of 20:30.2 to finish 59th overall in the field. Grad student Randi Burr (Westerly, RI) turned in a career-best time of 20:39.3 to finish 74th overall.
Junior Sophie Coughlin (Melbourne, Australia) ran her first race of the season and finished with a time of 21:03.7 for 128th overall. Senior Caroline Webb (Greenwich, CT) posted a finish of 21:10.1, a new PR on a 6K course, for 138th. Grad Student Celia Chacko (Newington, CT) ran in 21:11.6, a new PR, and freshman Maddie Reylea (Mayfield, NY) posted a time of 21:21.4, also a new PR.
"In the open race, Caroline Towle took fifth and Calista Mayer was 13th," said Sullivan. "Both had a great opportunity to race in the open and put a great effort in." Towle finished with a time of 21:43.3 and Mayer crossed the line in 21:54.2
"We are excited that today we showed some great overall fitness. As we move into this next part of the season, we need to fine tune the strategic part of it in order to get where we want to be and see the results that we expect. Virginia will a be a great racing opportunity for us and we are looking forward to it."
