STORRS, Conn. -Â The University of Connecticut women's cross country, men's and women's tennis, men's basketball, men's golf and men's hockey teams were honored on Wednesday with NCAA Public Recognition Awards for outstanding academic performance.
Teams are recognized with the Public Recognition Award by the NCAA for posting Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores that are in the top 10 percent nationally of their individual sport. The APR is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I sports teams nationally. All Division I teams' APR scores will be released May 8.
The latest APR scores cover a four-year period from 2014-15 to 2017-18.
The six squads earning a Public Recognition Award matches the second-highest total in school history, falling one shy of last year's record total.Â
"The effort and dedication our student-athletes display both in competition and in the classroom is a constant source of inspiration to me," director of athletics David Benedict said. "I am proud to be associated with such an outstanding group. Our Student-Athlete Success Program also plays a major role in the academic achievement of all 24 of our sports and I want to thank them for the great work they continue to do."
The men's golf team, under the direction of head coach Dave Pezzino, has been honored all 14 years that the APR program has existed. The honor is the third in-a-row for the men's basketball team.
The women's cross country team, winners of the 2017 American Athletic Conference Championship, and the men's hockey team were each recognized for the second-straight time.
The women's tennis program, led by head coach and director of tennis Glenn Marshall, has been honored 11 consecutive times, while the men's tennis program was recognized for the fifth-straight year and sixth time overall.
