Nelson Leads UConn Golfers To Fifth-Place Finish

HEALTH PLAN MOUNTAINEER INVITATIONAL RESULTS
BRIDGEPORT, WVa. --- UConn sophomore Jared Nelson (Rutland, Vt.) notched his second Top 10 finish in four events this season as he led the Huskies to a fifth-place team finish at the Health Plan Mountaineer Invitational, which ended with Tuesday's third round at the Pete Dye Golf Club.
Nelson also had his second sub-70 round of the season and the sixth of his career as he shot a 1-over, 75-69-73=217, to finish in sole possession of ninth place in the 81-player field. The sophomore also tied for the tournament lead in birdies with 12.
UConn shot an aggregate 308-291-291=890 to notch its third Top 5 finish in the four events this season. Host school West Virginia topped the 15-team field with an impressive even-par 864, while Youngstown State's Kevin Scherr won individual medalist honors with a 3-under 213.
UConn seniors Drake Hull (Rutland, Vt.) and Tim Umphrey (Northborough, Mass.) each recorded a Top 20 finish.
Hull, who led the tournament in Par 3 scoring at 1-under, finished in a tie for 17th place with a 7-over, 78-73-72. It is Hull's third Top 20 finish this year and 13th of his UConn career. He now has 39 career rounds of par or better.
Umphrey finished in a tie for 20th with an 8-over, 77-74-73=224, his third Top 20 finish this year and the 11th of his career.
Also for the Huskies, junior Jack Boulger (Walpole, Mass.) shot a 19-over, 78-75-82=235 to finish in a tie for 58th place, while redshirt junior Chandler Morris (Hobe Sound, Fla.) shot a 20-over, 81-82-73=236 to tie for 63rd place.
Playing as an individual, sophomore Nick Hampoian (North Reading, Mass.) finished with a 33-over, 87-80-82=249.
UConn will have some time off before it wraps up the fall portion of its 2019-20 schedule with its third consecutive trip to the Ka'anapali Classic Collegiate Invitational at the Royal Ka'anapali Golf Course in Lahaina, Hawaii on Nov. 1-3.
