UConn Closes Out Play at ITA Regional

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The UConn men's tennis team sent a trio of student-athletes to compete at the 2019 ITA Northeast Regional Championship at the University of Pennsylvania on Thursday and Friday.
Junior John Michael Holtmann (Coral Gables, Fla.) was 1-1 in doubles play in the singles qualifying bracket. Holtmann won his opening match over Lehigh's Gary Fishkin in a three-set battle, 6-1, 3-6 and 12-10 in the tie-breaker third set. He just missed getting into the main draw after falling to Pete Siozios of Boston University, 7-5 and 6-3. Classmate Yili Zheng (Shanghai, China) lost his first match to Lewis Edwards of Fairfield in a three-set heartbreaker. After falling 6-3 in the first set, Zheng battled to a 7-6 (5) win in the second but fell short in the third, 10-1.
In doubles action, Holtmann and sophomore Christian Provenzano (Montclair, N.J.) lost in the first round to Drexel's Xandy Hammit and Sanil Jagtiani, 8-4.
The Huskies will close out the fall season with a trip to the Army West Point Invitational in a two weeks on November 1-3.
