EAST HARTFORD, Conn. - The UConn men's tennis team picked-up their third-straight victory Saturday night by taking down Boston University, 4-3, at the East Hartford Tennis Club. The Huskies evened their season record at 8-8 with the win.
The match was knotted at 3-3 and came down to the No.5 singles spot where senior Arnaud Valentin (Ridgefield, Conn.) battled Mark Sable to three sets. After winning 6-2 in the first, Sable rebounded to answer with a 6-4 win in the second sending the match to the third. Valentin closed it out and delivered the Huskies the win with a 6-3 win, his second-straight singles victory. Valentin improved his team-leading singles record to 13-9 on the year.
The Huskies opened by sweeping all three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead into singles play. Freshmen Jacob Appleton () and Brady Flanagan (Overland Park, Kans.) kicked it off with a 6-4 win at No.3, their third-straight win playing together.
The senior tandem of Christopher Toner (South Hamilton, Mass.) and Parker Goldstein (Marietta, Ga.) clinched the point with a 6-4 win at No.1 over Lucas Bombonatti and Jay Leelavanich. The Huskies made it a clean sweep at No.2 where Valentin and sophomore Hank Hill (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) beat Jake De Vries and Mario Sandoval, 7-5.
Appleton and Toner added singles wins to their doubles victories to push the match to 3-3, setting up Valentin's deciding win. Appleton won at No.3, leading 3-2 in the first and winning by default over De Vries.
Toner won his No.1 singles match, beating Bombonatti 6-4 and 6-4, his second straight win.
The Huskies are back at it on Sunday afternoon when they host Bryant University on the UConn Tennis Courts in Storrs at 2 pm.
