ORLANDO, Fla. - The UConn volleyball team fell at UCF in American play on Friday evening in straight sets, 3-0 (25-16, 25-18, 25-17). With the loss, the Huskies (9-10) fall to 2-5 in conference action, while the Knights (10-9) improve to 3-4 in the American.
Redshirt-sophomore Kayla Williams continues to lead the way offensively for the Huskies, with nine kills and one service ace. Williams also boasted a team-high 10 digs in the match.
The Huskies were held to a season low .009 hitting percentage by a strong UCF defense who notched 11.5 total team blocks. Offensively, the Knights recorded a .330 hitting percentage of their own, while Kia Bright paced all players with 13 kills in the tilt.
While UConn opened each game with a lead, UCF battled from behind to slash the deficit each time and eventually capture the sweep.
SET 1
The Knights defense was too much to overcome for the Huskies who were limited to a -.081 hitting percentage. UCF's 6.5 total team blocks were led by Jeanne Westney and Kristina Fisher who picked up three blocks apiece.
SET 2
The two teams battled to a 6-6 gridlock early in the set, but it was UCF who took the lead and went running. The Knights cruised to a 25-18 victory in the set, behind eight kills from Kia Bright. The home team recorded an impressive .391 hitting percentage on their way to a 2-0 match advantage.
SET 3
UConn turned in its highest hitting percentage of the day (.103) in the final game, but it wasn't enough to overpower UCF's .441 hitting percentage. Junior Iman McGary headlined the Huskies' offense with four kills, while Turner picked up five of her total eight digs in the set.
The Huskies return to action on Sunday, Oct. 15 against USF. The match is slated to begin at 12:00 p.m.
