RALEIGH, N.C. - The UConn women's track and field team continued its outdoor season on March 25-26 when it participated in the 2016 Raleigh Relays, hosted by NC State.
"We have some areas that we need to work on but at this time of year that is expected," said head coach J.J. Clark. "I saw some positive moments and believe we are moving in the right direction."
Taylor Anderson notched a new career-best in the 100m dash prelims with a fifth-place 11.64 second result before finishing third in the final (11.72). Two Huskies, Nyanka Joseph (55.59) and Sydnee Over (55.84), notched top-10 finishes in the 400m dash finals, while Lisa Zimmer established a new collegiate-best in the 800m run, crossing the line in 2:09.20.
In the 1,500m run, Liz Lagoy (4:40.59) and Lindsey Kane (4:41.46) were the team's top finishers, taking 57th and 65th, respectively. Mary Monda Oewel grabbed 41st in the 5,000m run, clocking in at 17:31.22, while Toni-Ann Moore (14.64) and Ashley Wiggins (14.69) notched top-30 100m hurdle prelim results.
The Huskies' 4x100m relay team (Smith-Jenkins, Joseph, Bowens, Anderson) took fifth in the event with a time of 45.52. In the 4x200m relay, the 'A' squad (Smith-Jenkins, Joseph, Moore, Anderson) nabbed ninth with a 1:38.04 time.
Connecticut's 4x400m relay team (Taft, Over, Zimmer, Foley) shined on Saturday, earning a silver medal with a time of 3:42.32, while the 4x800m relay team (Vodopia, Howard, Williamson, Over) grabbed fifth (9:06.60). The team's 4x1500m relay team (Lagoy, Williamson, Kane, Pearl) notched a 18:50.65 time, earning fifth-place honors.
On the field, Odrine Belot finished fifth in the long jump with a leap of 5.77m and also took second in the triple jump with a result of 12.33m.
Two Huskies finished in the top-20 in the shot put, led by Kelly Myers' 13.47m toss, which secured her 14th overall. Saija Bikanova took 18th in the event with a toss of 13.23m. In the discus, Megan Chapman finished seventh after registering a season-best throw of 46.12m. Kelli Thomas rounded out field action with a 12th-place finish in the hammer throw (51.43m).
