Huskies Begin Outdoor Season at UCF

ORLANDO, Fla. - The UConn women's track and field team opened its 2016 outdoor season on March 18-19 at the UCF Black & Gold on the campus of Central Florida in an unscored meet.
"We had a good opening meet," said head coach J.J. Clark. "We accomplished many things in different events. It was a good start to our outdoor season."
UConn's 4x400m relay team (Smith0-Jenkins, Joseph, Taft, Over) ended the meet in style, collecting a first-place 4:01.21 second finish.
Sarah Bowens nabbed a gold medal in the long jump on Saturday, finishing with a stellar 5.62m leap.
The Huskies' 4x100m relay squad (Smith-Jenkins, Anderson, Brown, Joseph) earned a silver medal in the event, crossing the line in 45.57.
Seven Huskies finished in the top-15 in the 1,500m run led by a seventh-place result from Liz Lagoy (4:39.71). Lisa Zimmer (4:42.46), Kat Vodopia (4:45.00), Alana Pearl (4:45.99), Emily Howard (4:46.47), Courtney Ackerley (4:50.82), and Haley Hasty (4:51.07) rounded out the top-13.
Ashley Wiggins was the team's top finisher in the 100m hurdles, clocking in at14.81. In the 400m dash, Sydnee Over collected sixth with a time of 55.88, while Taylor Anderson (11.75) and Deysha Smith-Jenkins (12.08) finished third and sixth, respectively, in the 100m dash.
Two Huskies earned top-10 finishes in the 800m run, led by senior Laura Williamson's (2:12.28). Maggie Christe (2:16.19) took ninth in the event. The Huskies shined in the 5,000m run with Alexis Panisse (18:01.71), Williamson (18:05.49), Mary Monda Oewel (18:09.27), Lagoy (18:13.08) and Hasty (18:45.05) finishing in the top-eight. Please note: All women's 5000m times were unofficial due to a equipment timing malfunction.
In the pole vault, Gabriella Attanasio took sixth with a leap of 3.27m, while Nicole Kelly (3.27) took eighth in her first collegiate outdoor event. Melodee Riley took bronze in the triple jump with a jump of 11.59m.
On Friday, Theresa Swanke picked up a seventh-place finish in the javelin throw with a toss of 33.68m. Kelli Thomas was the team's top finisher in the hammer, collecting ninth with a 48.95m mark. In the same event, Megan Chapman (46.46m), Samantha Mazur (42.19m) and Kelly Myers (35.95m) all finished in the top-20.
In the discus, Chapman's throw of 44.21m was good for seventh. Myers finished eighth in the shot put with a 13.99m resut.
The Huskies continue the outdoor season next weekend at the Raleigh Relays, which are scheduled for March 25-26 in Raleigh, N.C.
