PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The University of Connecticut swimming and diving team finished competition at the Rutgers Quad Meet on Saturday evening in the RU Aquatic Center. The women's team went 0-2 in dual meets with Boston University and Rutgers while the men's team was 1-1, defeating BU, 199-154.
Three Huskies won their events on Saturday, starting with junior Christine Pedersen (Vinterbro, Norway) in the 100-backstroke with a time of 57.15. She also came in second in the 200-backstroke (2:02.70). Classmate Sophie Nothnagle (Victor, N.Y.) topped the competition in the 200-butterfly after she touched the wall first in 2:04.51.
For the men, sophomore Daniel Kinney (Middletown, Conn.) swept the diving events for UConn. Kinney took first on the one-meter by tallying 264.50 points before delivering a repeat performance on the three-meter platform behind 313.30 points.
Freshman Jackie Van Lew (Tinton Falls, N.J.) came in second in the 100-freestyle in a time of 52.68 and fellow rookie Julie Hu (Wilton, Conn.) completed the 100-breaststroke in 1:06.70 to place third. Classmate Annika Grewal (Oakville, Ontario) clocked in at 2:06.18 in the 200-backstroke for third and also rounded out the top three in the 200-IM with a time of 2:06.65.
Pedersen and Grewal joined junior Margot Manning (Frederick, Md.) and senior Laura Ruttan (Stittsville, Ontario) in the 200-medley relay to come in third (1:47.12). For the divers, senior Taryn Urbanus (Quincy, Mass.) was second on the one-meter with 285.65 points while junior Alexandra Butera (Havertown, Pa.) and sophomore Margot Marcello (Middletown, Conn.) were third and fourth, respectively. Urbanus was also third in the three-meter event.
Senior Jeff Magin (Brookfield, Conn.) and junior James Donlevy (Lake Grove, N.Y.) each tallied second place finishes on Saturday. Magin swam the 100-backstroke in 50.56 and Donlevy completed the 50-freestyle in 21.02.
The duo teamed up with sophomore Daniel Krentsa (Brookfield, Conn.) and freshman Luke Martin (Richmond, Va.) to complete the 200-freestyle relay (1:23.71) for second place. Magin and Donlevy were also members of the second-place 200-medley relay team with seniors Ryan Walsh (Monroe, N.Y.) and Greg Baliko (Fanwood, N.J.), who finished the race in 1:33.69.
Sophomore Jeffrey Aselin (Riverside, Conn.) was third on the one-meter platform with 257.60 points and junior Spencer Beaulieu (Portland, Conn.) checked in fifth (227.60 points). Both players claimed the same standings in the three-meter.
Sophomore Brandon Cole (Trumbull, Conn.) swam to third in the 400-IM behind a 4:10.13 time while freshman Mark Hunter (Pietermaritzburg, South Africa) clocked in at 2:07.87 in the 200-breastroke to take third place.
