GREENVILLE, N.C. - Senior standout Emily Durgin continued an excellent fall campaign when she collected a second-place individual finish at the 2015 American Athletic Conference Championships to help the UConn women's cross country team collect a third-place overall finish on Saturday, Oct. 31 at Lake Kristi in North Carolina.
Tulsa took the conference title with a meet-best 46 points followed up by SMU (68) and UConn (73). Next up, host-school East Carolina claimed fourth (148) ahead of USF (162), Memphis (185), UCF (188), Tulane (188), Houston (201), Temple (210) and Cincinnati (227).
Durgin, who was the top finisher at the 2014 conference meet, paced the Huskies for the second-straight year, crossing the line of the 6K race in 20:11.81 followed up by teammates Alexis Panisse (20:52.30) and Laura Williamson (20:55.64), who claimed ninth and 11th, respectively. Next up, freshman Courtney Ackerley placed 22nd at 21:31.12 ahead of Hannah Parker (21:55.67), Liza Zimmer (22:06.28), Abby Mace (22:55.01) and Maggie Christe (23:08.56).
"Durgin led from the gun and really fought the entire race," said head coach J.J. Clark. "She ran tough and I'm proud of her efforts. Alexis and Laura both delivered for our team while Courtney ran the race of her life. Parker also brough us home a score for the first time this year. While we were looking to win, this certainly gives us something to build on as we look toward NCAA Regionals."
Lake Kristi serves as the home course for the East Carolina men's and women's cross country teams. The course has been the home to numerous cross country meets throughout the years, including four NCAA Regionals and a pair of Conference USA Championship meets. Saturday's meet marked the Huskies' first-ever trip to the competition site.
