BOSTON - The University of Connecticut women's cross country team grabbed a 14th-place finish at the 2014 Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown on Friday afternoon at historic Franklin Park in Boston.
Redshirt-senior captain Lauren Sara (Stratford, Conn.) paced the Huskies for a third-consecutive week, taking ninth-place overall with a time of 17:15.0. The Husky leader ran the 5K race at a 5:33 mile pace. Fellow upperclassman Emily Durgin also grabbed a top-20 finish, crossing the line in 17:29.
Freshman Abby Mace delivered a solid performance, checking in at No. 85 (18:25.0), which was good for third on the Husky squad. Liz Lagoy finished 103rd (18:32.) and was followed up by Emily Howard (18:53) in 127th.
The Huskies finished with 306 total points, edging out Stony Brook (308), which entered the event as the No. 9 team in the Northeast regional. No. 1 Michigan won the event with 55 points.
The meet featured six nationally-ranked teams and seven top-15 Northeast Region teams.
"Our first two runners ran well and provided good scoring up front," said women's track and field head coach J.J. Clark. "This meet is a wake-up call for our team. I look forward to the team responding to this higher level of competition and training with great vigor."
"Lauren Sara and Emily Durgin ran well for us today," said second year coach Amy Begley. "They are our front-runners and know how to get it done. It is a good start for those two with more to come. They can work together and accomplish great things this season."
Next up, UConn will take part in the New England Championships in Boston on Oct. 11.
