PROVIDENCE, R.I. - University of Connecticut redshirt-senior Lauren Sara has been named the American Athletic Conference's Female Athlete of the Week, as announced by the conference on Tuesday morning.
Sara made her return to the Huskies' cross country team after sitting out the entire 2013 season due to injury. The Statford, Conn. Native won the 4K Lights Out Invitational in Reading, Pa. in a time of 12:50. Her result was 53 seconds faster than the nearest competitor. Overall, the Husky team took 10 of the first 11 spots in the invitational.
"It's great to have Lauren back after missing last year with injury" said head coach Amy Begley. "We're excited to have her as part of our team as we try to get to the next level."
In August, Sara was named a captain of the 2014 women's cross country team.
"This was a well-deserved honor," said women's track and field coach J.J. Clark. "Lauren has worked hard on her way back from injury."
Sara and the Huskies will return to action on Sept. 13 when the squad travels to Amherst, Mass. to participate in the Minutemen invitational. The race is set to begin at 11:30 a.m.
