Softball To Host USF

Storrs, Conn.- The University of Connecticut softball team will host the University of South Florida Bulls this weekend. The team will have an action packed weekend as they are scheduled to have a doubleheader on Saturday, April 14th with the first game starting at 12:00p.m. They will meet again on Sunday, April 15th with that lone contest commencing at 11:00a.m.
The USF Bulls are having an outstanding season, as they have gone 38-5 and are undefeated in the Big East (11-0). The story this year for the Bulls has been the exceptional pitching by its young rotation.
Leading the way on the mound has been sophomore Sarah Nevins who has maintained an astounding 0.58 ERA and has gone 23-2 on the season with 225 strikeouts. In addition to Nevins' stellar performance this season, Sam Greiner has also dominated with an era of 1.01 and has gone 9-3 in her twelve starts. Rounding out the rotation, is senior Lindsey Richardson who is undefeated this year going 6-0 and also has an ERA under 2.
Offensively for the Bulls, sophomore Stephanie Medina has led the way batting .331 and has posted 39 hits thus far. Helping Medina has been the likes of sophomore Kourtney Salvarola, who is batting .325 and has 20 RBIs on the season. This talented young team has been dominating their opponents and will give the Huskies all they can handle this weekend.
The Huskies will come to play on Saturday, as they have gone 4-1 in their last five games. UConn is currently 17-15 and is undefeated at home going 7-0. UConn's squad is coming off a tough loss to Quinnipiac and will be looking to make a statement against a strong Bulls team.
UConn will need another valiant performance offensively by senior Amy Vaughan (Somerset, Mass.). Vaughan is currently leading the team with a .357 batting average and has notched 31 RBIs on the season. Complementing Vaughan this season has been freshman shortstop Emily O'Donnell (Niskayuna, NY). O'Donnell has been solid in the field and at the plate batting .330 and driving in 23 RBIs.
Taking the mound for UConn will be junior Kiki Saveriano (Lexington, Mass) who has had a strong season so far for the Huskies. Saveriano has gone 11-8 this season while maintaining a 2.77 ERA.
The Huskies will be able to enjoy a stretch of six straight home games, as the team will face Rhode Island and DePaul in the upcoming week.
