Huskies Split Opening Day At Hofstra Invite

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (March 17, 2012) - Following a rocky start to the 2012 campaign, the Huskies firepower has proven to be a force to be reckoned with over the past four games, including Saturday afternoon when UConn tallied four homeruns en route to splitting the two games. With day one of the Hofstra Invite in the books, Connecticut moves to 5-9 on the season after falling to the Pride, 8-2, and defeating Maine, 8-2.
The first contest was a scoreless pitching duel until the fifth inning when each team notched a run to sit with a 1-1 score. With a tied game, the Pride (4-11) erupted adding seven runs on seven hits in the final two innings. Junior pitcher Kiki Saveriano was handed the loss to fall to 3-5 on the season as she threw six innings with six strikeouts and two earned runs.
Four Huskies recorded homers throughout the day as junior Brittany Duclos had hers in the Hofstra game for her first of the season, while senior Amy Vaughan, junior Kim Silva and freshman Emily O'Donnell all tallied on in the victory over Maine (5-18).
After being outhit 10-6 by Hofstra, UConn got the bats moving against Maine where they outhit the Black Bears 11-8.
It was a quick start for the Huskies in the second game when they put five on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning. With runners on second and third, Vaughan stepped to the plate and put the ball over the right center wall to register three RBI. Three batters later, Silva added two to the board with a two RBI homer to right field.
Improving to 2-3, freshman Lauren Duggan held Maine scoreless until the fifth inning where the Black Bears scored their first run following a passed ball and wild pitch. Duggan pitched 6.2 innings, allowing eight hits and giving up two earned runs.
In the sixth inning, O'Donnell had a single homerun, her fourth of the year, to left field to set the game at 8-1. O'Donnell concluded the day going 4-for-7 with one RBI, while Duclos went 3-for-6 with two RBI and Vaughan finished 3-for-7 with three RBI.
The Huskies will conclude the Hofstra Tournament on Sunday, March 18, when they take on Maine at 10 am and Hofstra at 3 p.m.
