STORRS, Conn. - The UConn women's track and field team headed to Princeton, N.J. this weekend for the Larry Ellis Invitational and took home two first-place finishes. Senior All-American Trisha-Ann Hawthorne won the 100m and led the 4x100m relay team to victory.
In the 100m, Hawthorne dominated the field, running 11:82 and beating the second-place finisher by nearly half a second.
Hawthorne anchored the 4x100m relay team to victory with a time of 46:36. Sophomore Kristen Brown opened before handing off to freshman Celina Emerson. Emerson transferred to Madalayne Smith before Hawthorne anchored the victory.
Smith went on to place third in the 100m hurdles on Saturday with a time of 14:52. Classmate Shavon Briscoe placed 10th in the 100m hurdles. She finished in 14.90.
Celina Emerson also competed in the 400 and 200. In the 400, Emerson placed third in 55:92. She finished 6th in the 200 at 25:00.
In the 800m run on Saturday night, sophomore Ana Groff placed third in 2:12.57 while senior Leah Andrianos placed 6th in the Friday version of the 800m, running 2:08.57.
Groff combined with Emerson and freshmen Imani Sudlow and Tiffany Daley to place second in the 4x400m. The quartet finished in 3:45.09.
Connecticut performed well in the field events this weekend as well, placing a student-athlete in fourth or higher in five separate events.
Redshirt senior Tynisha McMillian placed second in the shot put with a throw of 14.08m (46' 2.50") and fourth in the discus at 43.62m (143' 1").
Sophomore Whitney Holder led the way in the jumps, placing third in the long jump with a top mark of 5.56m (18' 3"). Ilva Bikanova jumped 1.65m (5' 5") and tied for third while Brittany Power placed fourth in the triple jump at 11.57m (37' 11.5").
UConn will now head to the world famous Penn Relays in Philadelphia next weekend. The meet begins on Thursday, April 28 and ends on Saturday, April 30.
