Women's Track Competes At Star-Studded UTech Invitational

STORRS, Conn. - A small contingent of UConn student-athletes traveled to Kingston, Jamaica and competed in the UTech International Invitational. Senior All-American Trisha-Ann Hawthorne took third in an incredible 200m field that featured the Olympic and World 100m Champion and the Olympic and World 400m Silver Medalist.
Hawthorne ran 23.66 and fell behind .97 seconds to Jamaican sprinting icon Shelly Fraser-Pryce. Fraser-Pryce, the reigning World and Olympic Champion in the 100m, set a world-leading time in the race as she ran 22.69 in the 200m. That time also set a new meet record.
Jamaican Shericka Williams placed second at 23.49. Williams earned silver medals in the 400m at the 2009 World Championships and the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
The UTech Invitational also featured a star-studded field in the men's 200m. Jamaican Yohan Blake set a new world-leading time in the race when he crossed the line at 20.33. He edged out a victory in a field that included former 100m world record holder Asafa Powell.
Three out of four members of the Jamaican 2008 Olympic Champion and world-record holding 4x100m relay team were in attendance. Along with Powell, sprinters Nesta Carter and Michael Frater competed in the 200m dash.
Hawthorne and Associate Head Coach Clive Terrelonge have competed for Jamaica during their track careers.
Hawthorne also competed in the 4x100m relay. Hawthorne anchored the relay which featured sophomore Kristen Brown and freshmen Celina Emerson and Madalayne Smith. The Huskies ran 46.41 to place second behind the UTech Jamaica team.
Emerson also competed in the 4x400m relay along with sophomore Ana Groff and freshmen Tiffany Daley and Imani Sudlow. Connecticut placed second at 3:44.54 behind a team from Cuba that ran a meet record of 3:35.22.
Groff competed individually in the 800m, running 2:15.59.
The remaining members of the 4x400m relay team competed in the 400m College Division. Emerson led the way with a season-best time of 54.93. She placed second. UTech's Venicha Baker took first at 53.74.
Sudlow placed third with Daley placing fourth. Sudlow also set a new season best at 55.63. Daley crossed the line at 57.28.
UConn sophomore long jumpers Kristen Brown and Whitney Holder competed in their specialty as well as the 100m College Division.
In the long jump, Brown placed second at 5.77m followed by Holder in fifth at 5.49m. UTech's Salcia Slack took first with a top leap of 5.83m.
In the 100m, Brown edged Holder once again, placing fourth in 12.07. Holder crossed the line at 12.30. UTech's Carrie Russell led the way at 11.56.
The Huskies will compete at the Larry Ellis Invitational in Princeton, N.J. this weekend before heading to the world famous Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pa. on April 28.
