Bid on Coach Auriemma's Game-Worn Tie
STORRS, Conn. - Maya Moore and Stefanie Dolson combined for 55 points and 17 rebounds as the No. 2 UConn women's basketball team came away with an 89-66 win over No. 9 DePaul on Saturday afternoon in Gampel Pavilion.
With the victory, UConn improves to 22-1 overall this season and a perfect 10-0 in the BIG EAST Conference. The Huskies handed DePaul its first league loss as the Blue Demons drop to 8-1 in BIG EAST play and move to 21-3 on the year.
Moore finished the contest with 34 points as she shot 14-of-16 from the field in 35 minutes of play. It was the 11th game of her career that Moore has registered 30 or more points, while she pulled down 11 rebounds for her 47th career double-double.
Dolson tallied 15 first-half points before finishing the game with a career-high 21. She added six rebounds and one blocked shot on the afternoon.
UConn began today's contest with a 10-6 run as Dolson started the afternoon 4-of-4 from the floor for eight of UConn's first 10 points. DePaul battled back to take its first lead at the 13:25 mark of the half as the Blue Demons went on their own 7-2 run to make the score 13-12.
With DePaul up by three at 19-16, UConn rattled off a 13-2 run, forcing DePaul to burn two timeouts, as Moore netted eight points during that span to give UConn a 29-21 lead.
After two ties and four lead changes in the first 20 minutes of play, the Huskies went into the locker room at the break with a 12-point lead. Moore led all scorers with 16 points at the half as she pulled down six rebounds as well.
The Huskies committed 13 turnovers in the first frame, while DePaul registered 12 points off those miscues.
UConn outscored DePaul 44-33 in the second half to hit its largest lead of 26 points at the 4:10 mark of the frame. The Huskies shot 67.9% from the floor to mark a season-high tally for the team as they made 36 of their 53 shot attempts.
The win marks UConn's 74th consecutive win at home since the Huskies' loss to Rutgers in the BIG EAST Tournament Championship final on March 6, 2007.
The Huskies head back on the road to face West Virginia on Tuesday, Feb. 8 in Morgantown. Game time for the BIG EAST contest is set for 7:00 p.m. and will be televised nationally on CBS College Sports.
