Huskies Perform Well At Quinnipiac Invitational

STORRS, Conn. - The UConn men's tennis squad competed over the weekend at the Quinnipiac Invitational in Hamden, Conn. Freshman Jacob Spreyer took home the title in "C" singles. Connecticut reached the semifinals in three other brackets as well.
Spreyer defeated B.J. Merander from Fairfield with ease in his opening match, 7-5, 6-1. Spreyer needed a tie-breaker to down Ernest Arguell in the quarterfinals, 7-5, 6-7 (3), 11-9, before advancing past Villanovas Kelly Donaldson in the semifinals, 6-3, 6-3. Spreyer would take the "C" singles championship with a come-from behind victory over Quinnipiac's Eric Ambrosio, 4-6, 7-6 (10-4).
Sophomore Ryan Carr also competed in the "C" singles, advancing to the semifinals. Carr won his opening match, 6-2, 6-2 before advancing to the quarterfinals with a 6-7 (7-4), 6-0 (10-5) victory over Alex Hallenbeck. Carr fell to Ambrosio in the quarterfinals, 6-2, 6-3.
Senior Scott Warden had a productive weekend, advancing to the championship in both the "A" singles and the "A" doubles.
In singles, Warden won his first two matches in straight sets. Warden would eventually fall in the finals in an extended tie-breaker to Bryant's Dana Parziale, 6-4, 4-6 (14-12).
In "A" doubles, Warden and Spreyer combined to reach the finals. The duo defeated Quinnipiac, 8-4, in the opener and Bryant in the quarterfinals by the same score. After defeating Villanova in the semifinals, 8-5, UConn's top duo fell to Bryant, 8-2, in the championship.
Senior Matt Burns also advanced deep into his flight. In the "D" singles, Burns defeated Robert Weese of Bryant, 4-6, 6-1 (10-8) and Villanova's Chris Cua, 6-4, 6-0. In the semifinals, Burns needed the tie-breaker but came away with a 6-1, 3-6 (10-8) result to dispatch Vidith Huot of Bryant. Burns had a valiant comeback in the championship, but fell just short to Bryant's Josh Rubinstein, 3-6, 7-5 (12-10).
Burns and freshman Joshua Palmer combined in the "B" to advance to the semifinals. The tandem displaced Fairfield in the opener, 9-8 (4). After defeating Boston University, 8-3, Burns and Palmer fell to Bryant's tandem in the semifinals, 8-2.
The Huskies will compete in a dual match at Bryant University beginning at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 12.
