WEST POINT, N.Y. - The University of Connecticut women's cross country program had a successful day at the Army Invitational. In its first meet of the season, UConn traveled to West Point, N.Y. and claimed three of the top-four spots. Freshman Allison Lasnicki (Conastota, N.Y.) finished first out of 66 competitors in her first race in the Husky blue and white. Lasnicki finished the race in 18:55.90.
"The course was really challenging with all the hills, particularly running up the ski mountain, but I felt like our team worked really well together and I must admit it felt pretty cool to win my first collegiate meet," said Lasnicki.
Along with Lasnicki's impressive performance, the Huskies had five other runners place in the top-10. Freshman Annabel Clarke (Rhinebeck, N.Y.) and sophomore Kimberly Moran (Brightwaters, N.Y.) were the Huskies next finishers. Clarke placed third in a time of 19:01.90 while Moran crossed the line right behind at 19:02.60.
"I was really pleased with the efforts of our team today, especially our freshman. We decided to sit out four of our top five for this meet so to still come out with the win and have so many of our athletes in the top ten was great. Freshman Allison Lasniki won the race outright and looked great doing it. And Annabel Clarke was not far behind finishing in third, but only six seconds behind Allison," said head coach Andrea Grove-McDonough.
Connecticut also claimed the eighth through 11th places led by sophomore Kristen Malloy (Glastonbury, Conn.) (19:17.20). Senior Heather Wilson (Homer, N.Y.) (19:26.10) placed ninth followed by freshman Cassondra Hunter (Preston, Conn.) (19:28.20) and senior Brittany Heninger (Bristol, Conn.) (19:48.60).
"I am really looking forward to how our team will look when we get the entire squad suited up , but right now I like what I see. The team chemistry could not be better and I only see us getting stronger as the season progresses," said Grove-McDonough.
Connecticut will compete in a pair of races next weekend including the BIG EAST Preview at Syracuse University on Saturday, September 11. UConn will also send a group of runners to the Central Connecticut State University Blue Devil Invite on Saturday, September 11. The race will be held at Stanley Quarter Park in New Britain, Conn.
