BOCA RATON, Fla. - In their first day of the Miken Classic at Florida Atlantic University, the University of Connecticut softball team dropped two games to Florida A&M and Miami (OH). The Huskies fell in game one, 5-2 despite a late comeback try and dropped a 2-0 decision to Miami (OH).
With the losses, the Huskies fall to 1-5 on the year while FAMU improves to 8-7 on the year while Miami (OH) even things out at 4-4 on the season.
The Huskies started the day off with a 5-2 loss to Florida A&M University, just their third loss to the Rattlers in the 20 year history between the two teams.
FAMU was the first to get on the board in the top of the second adding another three runs to the board in the fourth inning and one more in the fifth before the Huskies managed to get anyone across the plate.
UConn had their first chance to score in the bottom of the fourth inning. Julianne Towers (Goodlettsville, Tenn.) started things off with a double down the leftfield line advancing to third on a single to the pitcher by Brittany Duclos (Mystic, Conn.). Just one batter later, however, the Huskies luck changed as Towers was picked off on a line drive double play to the third baseman squashing UConn's chances of scoring.
In the fifth the Huskies were able to get a couple of runners across as Duclos recorded the Huskies' first homerun of the season. Towers got on base for the second time on the day singling up the middle and one batter later was brought home as Duclos recorded her first career homerun and the first roundtripper for the Huskies in 2010.
Connecticut was unable to get anything else across, though, and fell in game one 5-2.
The Huskies barely had time to reload when they took the field against the Redhawks in the second game of the tournament.
Taking the mound for the Huskies in game two was freshman Kiki Saveriano (Lexington, Mass.) who pitched well for UConn striking out four in six innings of work and letting up two unearned runs.
The game was a pitchers duel with zeros across the board until the Huskies let up two runs in the bottom of the sixth, just enough for Miami (OH) to come away with the victory. After reaching via a hit by pitch, Meghan Mawn moved over to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored two batters later after an error by the UConn shortstop. Another sacrifice bunt moved the Redhawk's second runner across the plate with the insurance run.
The Huskies were unable to get anything back in the top of the seventh and finished the day with their second loss.
UConn is back in action on Saturday, March 6 when they take on Florida State University in their lone game of the day at 9:00 a.m. on day two of the Miken Classic.
